What to expect from Traditional Chinese Acupuncture Treatment
The initial consultation and treatment will last approx. 1 ½ hrs. and includes taking a thorough case history. This is essential as it forms the basis of diagnosis. You may feel some questions are irrelevant to your condition, but all the information is essential in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), to provide the means for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
The consultation will also include tongue and pulse diagnosis which are considered a reflection of health in TCM. The treatment will then be tailored to the individual’s needs.
The needles are then inserted and gently manipulated to achieve an aching sensation known as ‘DeQi,’ which translates as ‘the arrival of Qi.’ Needles are retained in place for approx. 20 – 30 minutes. Patients generally find treatment to be deeply relaxing.
Other therapies are sometimes used if appropriate in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance the therapeutic effect of treatment.
Follow – up Treatments
Subsequent appointments include a consultation to check on the progress of the patient and a further treatment – sessions last approx. 1 hr.
Most people have a course of 6-12 treatments and usually notice changes after three to five sessions, depending on the condition being treated.
